Steam Scream V starts Monday: plan your Halloween horror picks

Steam’s Halloween event begins October 26. Before the sale tiles take over, decide what kind of horror you want—and keep demos, upcoming releases and discounted games separate.

Steam’s next horror event is almost here. Valve schedules Steam Scream V for October 26 through November 2, 2026, putting a week of horror discovery around Halloween. As of October 24, the event has not started. That matters if you are browsing a wishlist now: an announced festival date is not confirmation that a particular game is already discounted, or that your preferred title will participate.

What Steam Scream V includes

Valve’s event documentation describes a focus on horror, with a separate allowance for games whose base experience is specifically about Halloween. It also explains that the event can include discounted releases, upcoming games and titles with demos. Treat those as different things when browsing. A Coming Soon entry can be interesting without being playable today, while a demo is a sample rather than ownership of its complete game.

Our suggestion is to choose the kind of evening first. Do you want to investigate a story alone, solve something with a friend or deal with a threat that can interrupt the group? Make a small shortlist around that answer. A horror label covers very different experiences, and a dramatic thumbnail tells you little about how much time you will spend exploring, managing resources or repeating an encounter.

Check co-op requirements before planning a group night

For group sessions, check the actual player count and online requirements on each store page. Confirm whether a game needs separate copies, whether its co-op works online or on one device, and whether it supports the platforms your friends use. It is easier to change the plan before buying than to discover that the game you chose cannot accommodate the people you invited.

If a demo is available, use it to answer one concrete question. Try the controls, check whether subtitles are comfortable or see how the game runs on your computer. You do not need to finish every sample to learn something useful. Before assuming progress will carry forward, look for an explicit statement from the developer; neither participation in an event nor the presence of a demo establishes save compatibility.

Compare the actual offer when the event opens

For purchases, compare the final price with the content included. Look at the base game, edition extras and bundles separately, especially if you already own part of a collection. Check recent patch information and the themes that matter to you in player feedback. This article is not publishing a list of confirmed discounts: prices and participating products need to be checked on Steam when the event opens.

Valve lists the opening for October 26 at 10am PDT. Use Steam’s event page or countdown to confirm the corresponding time where you live. Until then, the useful preparation is a focused wishlist and an agreement with your group. Once Steam Scream V begins, you can spend the evening comparing the games that fit that plan rather than collecting an unfocused list of purchases.
