Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux have received their next-gen update on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, following the console launch on October 29. PC players on Steam, Epic and GOG received the update on October 22; the Windows Store release followed the console date. For returning players, this is a reason to check their existing library before buying another copy.
Metro Redux returns to PS5 and Xbox Series: check your free upgrade
The tunnels are open again on modern consoles. Metro’s free upgrade brings visual and performance changes, but your edition and hardware still matter.

Is the Metro Redux upgrade free?
The upgrade is free for most existing owners, according to PLAION’s support FAQ, which also cautions that some versions may not be compatible. The same FAQ notes that Japanese availability was still being finalized. Check the entitlement attached to your platform, edition and region rather than assuming every old purchase follows an identical upgrade path.
Graphics modes and platform differences
Deep Silver’s patch notes list native support for modern consoles alongside improved textures, environmental detail, lighting and sound. PS5 and PS5 Pro support includes a true-4K 60fps option and an upscaled-4K 120fps option on compatible displays. On Xbox, the notes specifically associate the 120fps option with Series X; that should not be read as a promise of identical modes on Series S.
On PC, the published changes include uncapped frame rates, upscaling support and fixes affecting controls and high-frame-rate play. These are announced capabilities and patch notes, not our benchmark results. The settings you can use comfortably depend on your computer and display.
What to check before returning to the tunnels
For a first session after updating, our advice is to check the installed version, open the graphics menu and choose one display mode to try before changing several settings together. If motion or responsiveness is your priority, test the higher-frame-rate option where supported. If you prefer image detail, compare the alternative on the same scene. Judge the result from your normal viewing distance.
Existing players should also check their save and cloud-sync status before moving between devices. Avoid deleting an older installation or save simply because an upgraded version appears in the store. If the library does not show the expected entitlement, use the official support route for your edition.
An upgrade to Redux, with no ray tracing
PLAION describes this as a quality-of-life upgrade to Redux, with no ray-tracing support. It is not a new remake built on the current 4A Engine. That distinction makes the update easier to assess: expect changes to these existing games, and use the detailed patch notes to identify what applies to your platform.
For newcomers, decide which game to begin with before installing both. For returning players, the practical starting point is simpler: check upgrade eligibility and settings, then revisit the tunnels. This article explains the published update information; it does not claim hands-on testing or guaranteed performance on every supported device.
